SEO & AEO for gyms & studios

Gym SEO from people
who live on recurring revenue.

A gym is a renewal business. So is ours. Two people started FreedInsure in February 2023 with zero startup capital — $227 in commission the first month, grown to $1.3M a year with roughly three-quarters of the book renewing. Membership works on the same math. We install the machine that fills the front door and stops the back door from leaking.

What's actually broken

Why gyms that fill up in January are empty by summer

We run a recurring-revenue book for a living. These are the leaks we'd look for first on your floor — front door and back door both.

Leak 01

January fills. The churn cliff follows.

The New Year wave signs up, tapers, and quietly stops coming — and the marketing plan's answer is to go find another wave. Acquisition with no retention machine underneath is a bucket with a hole in it. Membership is recurring revenue. The renewal is the business, not the signup.

Leak 02

ClassPass owns your member

Aggregators rent you bodies at discounted rates and keep the relationship — the profile, the booking habit, the data. You get a discounted visit; they get the customer. Every class they fill deepens the dependence, and the terms only ever move in their favor.

Leak 03

"Gym near me" is decided in the map pack

That box is won with reviews, categories, photos, and profile work — unglamorous maintenance that's easy to leave unowned. The best floor in town loses that search to the studio that did the homework. Tenure doesn't rank. Signals do.

Leak 04

The trial that ends in silence

A prospect sweats through the free class, takes the day pass, walks out — and hears nothing. No cadence, no ask, no join. The follow-up is where trials become members, and it's wiring, not willpower. A funnel that stops at the front desk isn't a funnel.

Leak 05

AI shortlists. You're not on them.

Ask an AI assistant "best gym near me for beginners." It answers with a confident shortlist built from structured content, reviews, and local signals. Studios that never did that work are absent — skipped before a search ever happens.

Leak 06

No math on a member's lifetime

What is a member worth across their whole membership? What does one cost to acquire? If nobody can answer, the marketing spend is a guess, discounting looks free, and the churn cliff carries no price tag. The math has to exist before the marketing can.

What we install

The machine we run on our own book, rebuilt for the gym floor

We didn't add fitness after reading about it. We run a business that lives on renewals, and a gym is a renewal business with a locker room. The local layer is its own discipline — the full breakdown is on the local SEO page — and the wiring is below.

  • Local SEO, the map pack, and the review engineA Google Business Profile built to win "gym near me," and a review ask wired to the happy moment — the finished class, the hit goal. It's how FreedInsure's clients left 519 Google reviews at 4.9 stars.
  • Class and program page architectureFitness searches are specific — "pilates near me," "powerlifting gym," "beginner boxing." A page for every program in every place you serve, so the specific search lands on you instead of an aggregator.
  • AEO: structured answers for fitness questionsBeginners ask AI assistants which gym fits them before they ever search. We write and mark up the answers so the shortlist names your studio instead of a generic listicle.
  • The membership machineTrial follow-up cadence, win-back campaigns for lapsed members, referral asks at the moment of progress. The cheapest revenue a gym owns is the member who almost quit and didn't.

We're not guessing. We keep a book renewed for a living.

FreedInsure: founded February 2023 by two people with zero startup capital. First month of commission, $227. It grew to $1.3M a year with three-quarters of the book renewing — and roughly three-quarters of the book renewed, because a written cadence never forgot anyone. A membership business lives or dies on exactly that math. The clients left the verdict in public: 4.9 stars across 519 Google reviews.

Gym marketers sell the signup and walk away from the renewal. We build for the renewal, because it's the part we've actually lived. The entire build is documented in the FreedInsure case study.

Questions gym owners ask us

Gym SEO is the work of making your gym or studio the answer when someone nearby searches — or asks an AI — where to train. In practice it includes a Google Business Profile built to win the 'gym near me' map pack; a review engine that asks every happy member at the right moment; a page for every class and program you run, because fitness searches are specific — 'pilates near me', 'powerlifting gym' — not generic; structured answer content so AI assistants put your studio on the shortlist; and a follow-up cadence on every trial and day pass so visibility ends in joined members, not just visits. Rankings that don't end in memberships don't count.
By owning the searches people already make and following up on every trial. Discounting trains members to wait for deals — and recruits the ones who leave for the next one. The alternative: win the map pack with reviews and profile work, build a page for every class and program so specific searches land on you, answer the questions beginners ask AI assistants, and put every trial and day pass on a written follow-up cadence instead of letting it end in silence. Then add retention — win-back campaigns for lapsed members and referral asks at the moment of progress — so the members you already have become the growth engine the discount was pretending to be.
We don't quote a package before reading your business. The free revenue diagnosis comes first: your visibility, your competitors, your trial flow, and your churn. Then the engagement is scoped to what's actually broken and priced against the expected return. The honest metric isn't cost per click or cost per lead — it's cost per joined member, measured against what a member is worth across the whole life of the membership. You see the price and the expected math in writing before a dollar moves. If the math doesn't clear, we say so.
By building the assets the aggregator substitutes for: visibility and relationship. Aggregators send you visitors at discounted rates and keep the customer — the profile, the booking habit, the data. To need them less, win the map pack and the searches for your own programs so people find you directly; run your own trial funnel with a follow-up cadence; and convert aggregator visitors into direct members while they're standing in your studio, when the switch costs them nothing. Treat aggregators as paid discovery, not as the business model. The goal isn't to quit them on principle — it's to own the member relationship so the discount stops being rent.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your studio named when someone asks an AI assistant a fitness question instead of typing a search — 'best gym near me for beginners', which studio suits a bad back, where to learn to lift properly. AI assistants build those shortlists from structured content, reviews, and consistent local signals; studios that never did the work are absent, and absent studios get skipped before a search ever happens. AEO means writing plain-language answers to the questions your members actually asked before joining, marking them up so machines can read them, and keeping your review and profile signals strong enough to be worth repeating.
